Of course long-term planning is important but companies also need immediate results so that they can operate successfully in the market tomorrow ... and no one can afford to wait a couple of years for an ROI.

A few years ago a service company approached us because it wanted to realise a large-scale sales promotion project for its entire sales force in all the branch offices - the project was planned to cover a 3 year period.

The argument: "A project of this scale needs time and preparation." We turned the order down. We didn't want to waste our client's money.

Then the credit crunch came. Suddenly the customer no longer had three years time - the economic crisis managed what we had failed to do, i.e. convince him that there is nothing in the business world that is worth waiting three years for. The market is here and now. Anyone who does something today needs immediate results.

Within three months of receiving the order, the S€LL-IT trainers had managed the turnaround. Not because we managed in three months what others need three years for, but because we know Pareto: We identified the 20 percent of process simplifications, targeted account planning and communication deficits of the sales reps that made up 80 percent of the success. And we saw the results in the balance sheet in the next quarter. You should only start talking about long-term prospects after you have seen the immediate results in the balance sheet ...
